As soon as I get a sniffle or a cough I no longer head to the medicine cabinet, I look into my fridge and fruit bowl.
With healthy portions of fruit and vegetables this leads me back onto the road of a strong immune system and keeping well.
If you have children at school, you know that when the winter hits germs seem to spread and the children catch something all the time. Touch wood we have been pretty lucky to date on catching most things.
In the last week though we have all caught a tickly dry cough. One of those coughs/colds that is worse at night and when you go to bed everyone has been coughing and spluttering and then losing sleep. Sleep has been interrupted, thus leading to a grumpy shouting house of miserable beings.
Rather than let this sort it self out, I decided we would inject vitamins and minerals into us, in the form of a smoothie. I did some homework and found this recipe. It tastes nice and I immediatly felt lifted afterwards.
This is full of citrus fruits and its a Vitamin C boost which helps maintain and build your immune system. Vitamin C is water-soluble, and the human body doesn’t make it on its own, we have to continually replenish it in our system. While it’s usually recommended that adults get about about 75-90 milligrams of C a day, there have been a few recent studies that cite the health benefits of getting around 500 milligrams a day. Adults can stomach up to 2,000mg of C daily, so 500mg is well within the healthy limit, but like most supplements, it’s good to check with professional first.
